Established during the 1980-1981 school year, the Campbell cricket team has been a consistent contender for the Scarborough Championship. Champions in 1983 and 1988, finalists in 1989, semi-finalists in 1997, the team is almost always in the play-offs.
The game itself is not of one of the popular games in North America, although it has been played in Canada for over 100 years. Cricket originated in England, and spread to all parts of the former British Empire - Australia, India, Sri Lanka, Africa, and of course, the Caribbean. Like football, which was also founded by Britain, "the scholars outran the master". And so today the best cricketers in the world come from Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and of course, the West Indies. They constantly beat England in most major tournaments.
Here at Campbell, our teams have been made up of players who originated from these countries. Outstanding among them have been Moneer S. from Guyana--captain of the 1993 championship team, Traddi S. from Jamaica--captain of the 1988 championship team, Vari G. from India, and today Asif S. and Kashif S. of the 1997 and 1998 teams. Cricket is one of the great character building games of the world, a great team game, with a lot of room for individual excellence. The Campbell team enjoy all of these things.
