Albert McTaggart Campbell

Albert McTaggart Campbell was born in Ridgetown, Ontario, in 1910, where he was raised on the family farm. His formal education extended to the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph and the University of Toronto. Upon graduation, he taught in Ontario secondary schools for fifteen years.

"Ab" began his service to Scarborough as a member of the School Board in 1943; moved on to become a councillor for Ward Three, then Deputy Reeve. In 1957, Albert Campbell became Reeve of Scarborough. For 13 years, Mr. Campbell served his Borough as Reeve, Mayor and Head of Council. Then on October 1st, 1969, he was elected by the Metropolitan Council to the position of Metropolitan Chairman. On his retirement from political life on July 30, 1973, Albert Campbell had served Scarborough and Metro Toronto in Municipal service for an unbroken span of 30 years.

In those 30 years, Ab Campbell not only devoted all of his time, interest and efforts to Scarborough and Metro, but he achieved the remarkable record of holding the position of President of the Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities; The Ontario Municipal Association and The Association of Ontario Mayors and Reeves, as well as serving countless advisory bodies.

The story is now legendary. The Scarborough Civic Centre was Ab Campbell's dream and it is unquestionably fitting in every sense that the public square at the Centre should bear his name. It is also fitting that the sculpture which most captured the fancy of this beloved man, on a trip to Sweden with Mrs. Campbell in 1967, should have a place of honour at the Centre.
